Greatwood Gold Cup

Saturday’s big race comes from Newbury with the Greatwood Gold Cup head lining the card. Our Vic looks to turn back the clock by winning another big handicap at the tender age of twelve. Not only is time against David Pipes horse but the trip and ground will make it very difficult for the son of Old Vic to get competitive. A field of nine go to post with question marks hanging over the majority of them. Hopefully we can get the winner by marking the losers off first. (more…)

The Albert Bartlett Novice Hurdle

The Albert Bartlett Novice Hurdle is run on Gold Cup day at the festival. It usually attracts classy staying types who develop into decent chasers, as previous winners prove. The last three winners have gone on to bigger and better things over the larger obstacles, Weapons Amnesty (2009), Nenuphar Collonges (2008) and the ill-fated Wichita Lineman (2007). English trainers have won three of the last five runnings, the Irish have one and the French one too. (more…)

Ryanair Chase Preview

The introduction of the Ryanair Chase has been a welcome addition to the festival. The race is only five years old but we have seen some decent horses win the Thursday race. Thisthatandtother was the premier winner in 2005, while Our Vic won the 2008 running. Cheltenham Gold Cup contender Imperial Commander won last years renewal beating Schindlers Hunt, who entered again. Dessie Hughes’ horse will do well to finish in the frame this year though, the 2010 running looks quite competitive. (more…)

Royal and Sun Alliance Chase - Cheltenham Day Two

The Royal and Sun Alliance Chase is one of Wednesday’s big novice races. It’s quite a test for a novice as nineteen fences have to be jumped over the three mile trip. Good jumping is essential as there is nowhere to hide from the usual frenetic gallop. It’s a race in which the U.K trainers do well in, winning eight of the last ten runnings. (more…)
