Tricast Bet – An Explanation

Tricast Betting

One of the most popular types of bet available for horse racing and greyhound racing is the ‘tricast’ bet. This involves making three selections in any given race. In a ‘tricast’ bet, your three selections must finish first, second and third in that race. The payouts on ‘tricast’ bets are generally higher as it is difficult to pick the first three finishers in an event.

There are two main types of ‘tricast’ bet available:

Straight Tricast – In a ‘straight tricast’ bet you pick the first, second and third finishers in a race and specify in which order they will finish.

For example, a £10 ‘straight tricast’ on trap 6, trap 3 and trap 1 in a greyhound race would mean that trap 6 would have to win the race with trap 3 in second place and trap 1 in third place for your bet to pay out.

This bet would cost £10.

Combination Tricast – In a ‘combination tricast’ bet you pick the first, second and third finishers in a race but not the specific order in which they will finish. As long as they finish in the first three places in any order your bet will pay out.

For example, a £10 ‘combination tricast’ on trap 2, trap 3 and trap 4 in a greyhound race would mean that trap 2, trap 3 and trap 4 would have to finish in first, second and third places, in any order.

This bet would cost £60 rather than £10 (in the example of a ‘straight tricast’.) This is because there are six different possible ‘orders’ in which your three selections can finish in the first three.

You can also make four or five selections under a ‘combination tricast’. As long as three of these four or five selections finish in the first three places then your bet will pay out. Beware however that, for example, four selections would mean you were placing 24 bets and five selections would result in 60 bets.

In horse racing, there normally has to be at least 8 runners in a handicap race for a tricast bet to be available.

You simply choose the ‘tricast’ tab in any given race, make your three (ore more) selections and then choose either ‘tricast’ or ‘combination tricast’ on your betslip. Don’t forget that a ‘combination tricast’ will increase your total stake amount.
