Aston Villa v Manchester United - Carling Cup Final

The first major piece of domestic silverware will be handed out this Sunday as Aston Villa take on Manchester United in the Carling Cup Final at Wembley.

After using the Carling Cup to blood youth team and fringe squad players for years, Sir Alex Ferguson has taken the League Cup more seriously in recent years. Indeed, since United went down 2-0 to Ian Dowie’s Coventry City side in September 2008, they haven’t lost a tie in the competition (other than the first leg defeat to Manchester City in this season’s semi-final). The United side has been much stronger in the Carling Cup this time around and with Ferguson resting several key players in the 3-0 win over West Ham in midweek, it’s clear he expects to put a strong team out at Wembley on Sunday. Welcome to our weekly column where we try and seek good value in some longer odds bets.
Review

A frustrating week this week. Stoke did the business for us against Portsmouth before Mallorca cost us a nice profit by losing their first home match of the 2009/10 season. Stacey Slater (not Ian Beale) killed Archie in Eastenders and Ross Fisher had a terrible WGC World Matchplay, losing in the first round to Thongchai Jaidee.

Carling Cup Final

The first major domestic silverware of the season will be decided this Sunday as Aston Villa take on Manchester United in the Carling Cup Final at Wembley.

United have shown signs of taking this tournament more seriously in recent years with two of their three League Cup wins coming in the last four years. The reigning champions have played a much stronger side in the Carling Cup in the last couple of years and haven’t lost a fixture in the tournament since September 2008. (more…)

Aston Villa v Man Utd - Carling Cup Final

The facts don’t seem to back up the theory that the top clubs no longer take the Carling Cup seriously. Since Middlesbrough’s success in 2004, Chelsea, Manchester United (both twice) and Spurs have had their hands on the trophy and another of the Premier League big guns will win it again in 2009 as United defend their title against Aston Villa at Wembley. Carling Cup Betting

It’s all about the Carling Cup this week and we’re down to the last 16 with last year’s winners, Man United, set to visit Barnsley.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side visit Oakwell for the first time in over 10 years and despite seeing the Tykes off twice in the Premier League campaign, including a 7-0 victory at Old Trafford, Barnsley managed to pull off a 3-2 win in an entertaining FA Cup replay. (more…)
