Carling Cup Betting

It’s all about the Carling Cup this week and we’re down to the last 16 with last year’s winners, Man United, set to visit Barnsley.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side visit Oakwell for the first time in over 10 years and despite seeing the Tykes off twice in the Premier League campaign, including a 7-0 victory at Old Trafford, Barnsley managed to pull off a 3-2 win in an entertaining FA Cup replay.

Tykes manager Mark Robins comes up against his former club and former boss in Ferguson, whom it is widely speculated would have been sacked had Robins not bagged the winner in a 1990 FA Cup third round clash with Nottingham Forest. I don’t expect Ferguson to be in the business of handing out favours but he looks certain to go with a weakened team. Having inspired Barnsley to victory over Burnley in the last round of the Carling Cup alongside wins over Doncaster and West Brom in the league, Robins could be set to turn the tables on his former chief. Following Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over United at the weekend you can back a former Reds youngster to inflict further misery on Fergie’s side by backing Adam Hammill to score the first goal at 18/1.

Last year’s finalists Tottenham have a home-tie with Everton. Harry Redknapp’s side have a number of injury concerns following the weekend’s defeat to Stoke and have a north London derby with Arsenal coming up on Saturday so I expect a mixture of first-team and fringe players to feature on Tuesday.

Everton are winless in four games, and have conceded eight in the last two games following a 5-1 defeat to Benfica and a disappointing 3-2 reverse at Bolton. David Moyes’ side may struggle at White Hart Lane if Spurs are on their game and I would take Jermaine Jenas first goal at 14/1 along with a 3-1 Tottenham win at 11/1.

The swine flu virus has infected a number of the Blackburn squad so Darren Ferguson’s Peterborough side will be looking to spring a surprise at Ewood Park. Posh saw off Scunthorpe 3-0 at the weekend for their first win in six and will be looking for one of Craig Mackail-Smith, George Boyd or Aaron McLean to lead the way. The trio have 20 goals between them so far this campaign and after his double at the weekend I would back Boyd to open the scoring at 10/1. You can back Peterborough to snatch a 2-1 win at 11/1.

Elsewhere Arsenal face Liverpool on Wednesday. The Gunners are renowned for playing their youngsters in the Carling Cup and bar the possible inclusion of Samir Nasri, who is returning to action following a broken leg, I expect this policy to carry on. Jack Wilshere looks set to be next big thing at the Emirates Stadium and you can back him at 8/1 top open the scoring.

Manchester City face Championship side Scunthorpe and without the distraction of Europe the Citizens are taking the competition seriously. Mark Hughes will look to field a strong side, but City have been conceding goals of late, I fancy Man City to progress in an entertaining 4-2 win at 35/1.
