Gunners are a Sound Wager to Shoot Down Battle Weary United
Battle may be an apt word to describe Arsenal’s Premier League clash with Manchester United at the Emirates on Sunday. There isn’t any getting away from the fact that the two sets of players simply don’t like each other very much. Nor, one suspects, is there much love lost between managers Arsene Wenger and Sir Alex Ferguson.
Wenger was sent to the stands for arguing over the decision to disallow what would have been a last-minute equaliser when Arsenal lost 2-1 at Old Trafford back in September in a game in which nine players were yellow carded. The Frenchman and his opposite number have a very different footballing philosophy but there is no doubting the passion with which both conduct their business and there is rarely a dull moment when the two teams meet nowadays.
Arsenal haven’t lost in the league since being overturned by current leader Chelsea at the Emirates at the end of November. But they have conceded twice and had to come from behind in their last two home matches.
Wednesday’s 0-0 draw with Aston Villa has cost them the services of Croatian striker Eduardo and in-form Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen this weekend but that may have opened the door for the likes of a fit-again Niklas Bendtner to regain his first team place and, of course, pit Sol Campbell against former England team-mate Wayne Rooney. The Gunners are naturally still prominent in the betting to win the Premier League, as are United.
Arsenal or Manchester United To Win Premier League
So what of United? Their dramatic Carling Cup semi-final win over near-neighbours City during the week will certainly have them on a high coming into this crucial clash in the capital. But will that epic encounter have taken its toll physically on some of the squad? They’ve suffered a setback since with the news that key defender Rio Ferdinand will miss the next four league games following his indiscretion against Hull’s Craig Fagan.
With Nemanja Vidic and John O’Shea sidelined, that probably means Johnny Evans and Wes Brown will be asked to anchor the United back line and that will be an area Arsenal will think they can exploit. Rooney is, of course, in fantastic scoring form and there’s the added bonus this week that if he or Arsenal skipper Cesc Fabregas, who has also been finding the net on a regular basis of late, score the last goal this weekend, Paddy Power will refund all losing first/last goalscorer, correct score and scorecast singles.
