Football Betting Preview
After a weekend of shock results in the Premier League we have an almost full programme of midweek games to look forward to on Tuesday and Wednesday.
After suffering a 1-0 home defeat to Wolves on Saturday Tottenham host draw specialists Manchester City at White Hart Lane and will be looking for their first win in nine games.
Since their 9-1 mauling of Wigan, Harry Redknapp’s Spurs side have recorded two draws and two defeats, including being dumped out of the Carling Cup by City’s rivals, Manchester United. A point separates Spurs and City who lie in fifth and sixth spot respectively and they are two points off Aston Villa in fourth. Eight of the last nine league fixtures between these sides have finished up with a 2-1 scoreline with Spurs winning seven of those matches.
You can get 7/1 on Spurs recording another 2-1 victory. The Citizens last win in the league at White Hart Lane came back in 2003 when they took a 2-0 victory back up to Manchester. Jermain Defoe has 13 goals for Spurs this season and has three goals in his last five appearances against Man City and is available at 5/1 to score first on Wednesday.
Rafa Benitez revealed Liverpool’s ‘season starts now’ following their 2-1 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday. Probably a disappoint for the hoards of Reds fans who have paid to watch the side in the previous 24 games of this current campaign and have seen them crash out of the Champions League and Carling Cup, while a title bid looks over before we even reach the half way stage in the league.
Three wins in 15 matches for the Reds will give Roberto Martinez’s Wigan side all the motivation they need to come away with something from Anfield. Wigan were unfortunate not to take all three points from their clash with Stoke at the weekend with a spectacular Maynor Figueroa strike from his own half giving them a lead before a Ryan Shawcross equaliser. Hugo Rodallega missed a late penalty which would have given them a impressive victory at the Britannia Stadium but you can back Rodallega to make amends by scoring the open at an inviting 10/1.
Having already won impressively at Aston Villa and beating Chelsea at the DW Stadium, Wigan will fancy taking a point from Anfield and the 1-1 draw at 15/2 is my bet.
Following a historic win at Old Trafford on Saturday, Aston Villa take a trip further north to the Stadium of Light to take on Sunderland. The Black Cats have managed just one win in the last eight games against Villa, while Martin O’Neill’s completed the double in the fixture last year with two 2-1 victories.
Villa are unbeaten in six games now and have leaped into the top four with a two point gap between them and Spurs in fifth. Victory on Tuesday could extend that lead to five and would be a handy gap to have as we enter the busy Christmas period.
Sunderland have only lost one game at home all season but I see Villa taking all the points from this clash. You can get 25/1 on a 3-2 Villa scoreline while captain Stilian Petrov is 20/1 to break his duck for the season and open the scoring.
Elsewhere Man Utd will want to bounce back from their only their second Premier League defeat in 32 games with a win against Wolves. Victory at Tottenham gave Wolves their first back-to-back wins in the top flight since 1983 but a third successive win might just be too much to ask. Following his surprise Sports Personality of the Year award Ryan Giggs is 9/1 to open the scoring while a 3-0 United win is 5/1.
