Top Goalscorer Daily Preview – Saturday 3rd July

World Cup Top Goalscorer Daily Preview

Two of the World Cup’s great nations meet in Cape Town on Saturday in a repeat of the 1986 and 1990 Finals. For all our sakes, let’s hope that it is more like the 1986 final than the dour war of attrition the two nations played out in 1990.

With the possible exception of Chile, Argentina and Germany have been the two most expansive, attacking sides in the tournament so far. Diego Maradona’s side have scored ten goals on their way to the quarter finals whilst Germany have scored nine, including smashing four past both Australia and England.

Spain v Paraguay Betting Tips

Quarter-Finals: Paraguay 13/2 v Spain 1/2 (Saturday 3rd June, 7:30pm)

Before we look at some more World Cup betting tips let’s focus on Paraguay, whose counter-attacking style might actually benefit them against Spain. The South American’s attacking instinct leaves a lot to be desired and with only three goals in four games they will need to improve dramatically in the last third of the pitch if they are to cause a major upset and reach the semi-finals of the 2010 World Cup.

Uruguay v Ghana Betting Tips

Quarter-Finals: Uruguay (11/10) v Ghana (11/4) (Friday 2nd July, 7:30pm)

Before we look at some World Cup betting tips let’s take a look at Uruguay. Following a controversial play-off win against Costa Rica to qualify for the 2010 World Cup, Uruguay have somehow made it through to the quarter-finals stage. It isn’t testament to their defence, which rocked under pressure against South Korea, but soley to their two outstanding strikers Diego Forlan and Luis Suarez, who will likely leave his current club Ajax before the new season starts.

Top Goalscorer Daily Preview – World Cup Betting – Friday 2nd July

World Cup Top Goalscorer Daily Preview

In years gone by, a Brazil v Netherlands encounter would have been a purists dream as two nations famed for their expansive, attacking football went head to head in a World Cup knockout. Indeed, matches between these two sides have often been classics.

The Johans – Neeskens and Cruyff – scored in 1974 as the Netherlands won 2-0 on their way to the World Cup Final. The 1994 encounter in Dallas came to life in the second half as Romario and Bebeto put Brazil 2-0 up before Bergkamp and Winter replied for the Dutch. Only a late Branco free-kick won the match for the eventual champions.

Playing The Odds

Welcome to our weekly column where we try and seek good value in some longer odds bets.

Well, it’s been another disappointing couple of weeks. Alexis Sanchez might have been Chile’s best player at the World Cup, but he wasn’t their top goalscorer. Jim Furyk was eight off the pace at the US Open and Caroline Wozniacki was going well at Wimbledon until she was thumped in the fourth round.

Still, we did get 2.5 pts from our Denmark/Paraguay double in South Africa….

The World Cup reaches the quarter final stages this weekend with all the remaining teams holding genuine hopes of taking the title.

Port Elizabeth hosts the pick of the ties on Friday as five times winners Brazil take on perennial nearly men the Netherlands. Both sides play a more organised, disciplined game than many of their illustrious predecessors, although both have players capable of moments of individual brilliance.

World Cup Daily Preview – Friday 2nd July

Friday 2 July – WC Day 22

The World Cup reaches the quarter finals on Friday with two ex champions, the leading African nation and the tournament’s nearly-men all in action.

Brazil v Netherlands

The quarter finals kick off with (at least on paper) one of the most attractive international fixtures the game can throw up. Five time winners Brazil take on the Netherlands, a country still trying to win its first World Cup.

Both nations are associated with free-flowing, attacking football but, oddly, both have achieved excellent recent runs of form based on discipline and organisation.

Spain v Portugal Betting Predictions

Round of 16: Spain (19/20) v Portugal (10/3) (Tuesday 29th June, 7:30pm)

For me, Spain look too delicate for this stage of the competition and they face a Portugal team in the last sixteen of the 2010 World Cup who are full of intensity, make hard challenges and play quick and direct when in possession of the ball.

With Portugal likely to drop off, to the point where they effectively play with no forward, Spain will be able to settle into their normal rhythm of possession.

World Cup Betting – Paraguay v Japan Preview

Japanese Industry Could Derail Paraguay

It’s impossible to describe how much staging the World Cup in 2002 progressed football in Asia. South Korea have reached the last 16 in South Africa and so have Japan, and there’s a flourishing league nowadays in the land of the rising sun which attracts players from South America and Europe. Some of their best players are also making their mark overseas, including the star of their show so far Keisuke Honda. The CSKA Moscow midfielder scored the winner in their opening game against Cameroon and set the Japanese on their way to a 3-1 victory over Denmark which clinched their place in the knockout stages.

Netherlands v Slovakia Betting Predictions

Round of 16: Netherlands (4/9) v Slovakia (7/1) (Monday 28th June, 3pm)

The Netherlands looked a well balanced team during their group stage matches. A host of impact substitutions (Ibrahim Affelay & Eljera Elia) combined with a resolute and organised defence helped the Dutch to three comfortable victories.

Slovakia overcame a vunerable Italian side in their last match but their defensive weakness and lack of quality is a major concern for them as they face a Dutch side who have fluency, who take a comfortable hold on the game and have the attacking flair of Robin van Persie and Arjen Robben to trouble even the greatest defence.

Brazil v Chile Betting Predictions

Round of 16: Brazil (8/15) v Chile (11/2) (Sunday 28th June, 7:30pm)

Well before I waffle on let me take back the fact that I mentioned Chile had no balance in the side. They didn’t show it in the match against Switzerland but they demonstrated what a well organised oufit they can be in their last match against Spain. Sadly though, against Brazil they will be out of balance as some of their defensive players miss the game through suspension.

Paraguay v Japan Betting Predictions

Round of 16: Paraguay (11/10) v Japan (11/4) (Tuesday 29th June, 3pm)

Boasting one of the best organised defences in the 2010 World Cup, Paraguay take on an equally well organised side in the form of Japan, who have recorded eye-catching victories over Cameroon and Denmark.

There is an element of doubt over Paraguay’s ambitions for this year’s World Cup as they disappointingly showed zero aspiration of troubling the New Zealand defence in their final group stage match. In contrast, Japan showed great attacking capability as they knocked three goals past Denmark in their last game.
