Betting Tips – Aintree
2.00 – John Smith´s Top Novices´ Hurdle (Grade 2)
A very weak but open Grade Two to get us underway for the second day of the Aintree Grand National festival. A number of horse hold strong chances with four in particular taking my eye; Andhaar, Desert Cry, Perfect Smile and Topolski. The two to side with however, are Topolski and Desert Cry. The former looks to be improving at a rate of knots since his switch from the flat. A former above average type on the level, its looks as if he’ll make his presence felt today. The return to a flat track may well see Dessert Cry go well. Donald McCain’s charges recent form has been strong and this was boosted by Wyse Hill Teabags good showing yesterday. Both look progressive and both warrant a bet.
1pt win Topolski @ 5-1
0.5pts each-way Dessert Cry @ 8-1
2.30 – John Smith´s Mildmay Novices´ Chase (Grade 2)
Another open and competitive heat with plenty holding chances. Quito De La Rogue will come into this race fresher than the majority of his rivals and is taken to score. Many hold fears about his ability to handle quick ground but, until he has tried it, we’ll never know. His pedigree suggests he has a great chance of going on the quicker surface. He is the top rated horse in this line-up also, and looks as if he could progress further again. The excellent Davy Russell takes the mount and hopefully he can go well.
2pts win Quito De La Rogue @ 7-2
3.05 – John Smith´s Melling Chase (Grade 1)
The classy Alberta’s Run will not be easily turned over in the race he won last year. The multiple Grade One winner thrives in the spring and with Tony McCoy in the plate, is sure to go well. The faster the ground the better for Jonjo O’Neill’s charge so hopefully the Aintree sod continues to dry into tomorrow. He’ll be opposed by some top types including Master Minded, Somersby and Kalahari King but, I feel there may be more improvement to come after his terrible start to the season.
2pts win Alberta’s Run @ 7-2
3.40 – John Smith´s Topham Chase Handicap (Listed Race)
With thirty runners going to post for the Topham, luck in running is going to be at a premium. Many feel these races are pure luck but, I have plenty faith in my rule, that horses who experience these fences are at a huge advantage. With that being the case Ballyholland, Frankie Fig and Stormin Exit are the three for me. All three are double carpet prices so a bet is advised on all three but, Stormin Exit would be the number one pick.
1pt each-way Stormin Exit @ 14-1
0.5pts each-way Ballyholland @ 16-1
Frankie Fig @ 12-1
4.15 – John Smith´s Sefton Novices´ Hurdle (Grade 1)
Twenty runners going to post for the Sefton Hurdle in which a whole host of potentially top class prospects are going to line-up – it looks a really good renewal. With four or five horses holding strong chances, a value approach is taken on Aikman. He ran a very creditable race when seventh in the Neptune. On that form he hasn’t a whole lot to find with some of today’s field and his front running style will be suited to the course. Good ground will also aid his cause.
0.5pt each-way Aikman @ 20-1
4.50 – John Smith´s smithythehorse.com Handicap Hurdle (Grade 3)
0.5pts each-way Dynaste @ 14-1
