Super League XXII preview

Super League XXII preview

2017 sees the 22nd Super League and it promises to be another exciting season over 23 rounds of matches.
2016 saw the first promotion top the top flight in six years, with the top flight also unexpectedly losing Hull KR. Keep reading for our Super League XXII betting preview.

Reigning champions the favourites in the rugby betting

Over the last couple of seasons the Super League has become more and more unpredictable, meaning it’s tougher to predict the outcome but possible to profit with some canny choices.
Last year Wigan Warriors finished third in the regular season before dispatching Warrington Wolves in the Grand Final and the champions look every bit as strong this season.
They have retained the bulk of the squad that won last year’s showpiece and with Joe Burgess having turned down a contract offer from South Sydney to return, their attack remains strong.
Of course the champions don’t always go well – you only have to look at the Rhinos finishing in the bottom four last year – but Wigan are worthy favourites at 5/2.
Yet again it was ‘close but no cigar’ for Warrington last season and the Wolves have yet to win a Grand Final. They also lost the Challenge Cup final and will be keep to grab some silverware this time around.
Kevin Brown looks like a sound replacement for Chris Sandow and there is plenty of experience at half-back. They are 11/4 to finally break their Grand Final duck.
St Helens have been dealt a blow with an injury to new signing Matty Smith but they have recruited well this winter with Luke Douglas looking an eye-catching addition to Saints’ front row. They are just 8/15 to secure a top four finish.
Castleford Tigers have just missed out on the play-offs in the last couple of seasons but could finally make the end-of-season matches in 2017.
The Tigers have been improving over recent years and boast new England international Luke Gale – a real creative presence – and former Man of Steel winner Zak Hardaker in their ranks. Castleford are 7/4 for a top-four finish which looks like great value.

Vikings lead the ‘bottom of the table’ Super League betting

While their city rivals were being relegated from the Super League, Hull FC finished top of the regular season table, making the play-offs where they lost to eventual champions Wigan.
It will be tough for Hull to repeat their heroics of last season, especially since they have lost the experience of Frank Pritchard and Kirk Yeaman. They are odds-on to finish in the top four but there’s not much value in that bet.
The demise of Leeds Rhinos was one of the big stories of last season and having missed out on the play-offs in 2016 they are expected to improve this year. With a young side it will be tough for the 2015 champions to make the top four, although they are just 1/5 to make the top eight this time around.
Huddersfield Giants finished bottom of the regular season table last year and their recruitment has been underwhelming. Saying that, their pre-season results have been good and if they can get off to a good start they could start looking up rather than down. The Giants are odds-on for a top eight finish.
With two minutes to go of last season’s Million Pound Game it looked as if Salford Red Devils were destined for the drop. Trailing 18-10, a try from Niall Evalds and Greg Johnson’s score with the last play of normal time levelled the scores, before Gareth O’Brien kicked a dramatic drop-goal in golden-point extra time.
The addition of Todd Carney should help the Red Devils this season and there’s a bit of value in the 13/8 available on them finishing in the top eight.
Leigh Centurions are the first promoted team in six years and will need to continue their strong home record to have any chance of staying up this season. Their battle at the bottom is likely to be with Widnes Vikings and Wakefield Trinity with the Vikings the 11/4 favourites to finish bottom of the table.

Super Bowl XLIX Preview

Super Bowl XLIX Preview

It is America’s biggest sporting event on Sunday as Super Bowl XLIX takes place at the University of Arizona Stadium in Glendale.

For just the third time in 21 seasons, the number one seed from each conference will meet in the league championship game. AFC champions New England Patriots will take on NFC champions Seattle Seahawks in a contest that will be broadcast live around the world. Keep reading for our preview of the 2015 Super Bowl.

Patriots in the Super Bowl for the 5th time in 11 years

Since the turn of the century the Patriots have been one of the sport’s dominant forces. Led by star quarterback Tom Brady they won the Super Bowl three times in four years in the early 2000s before reaching the showpiece again in both 2008 and 2012.

While the Seahawks’ quarterback could end up as one of the most successful of all time, the Patriots already boast a legend. 37 year old Tom Brady is nearing the end of his career but has carried his team to six Super Bowls and would dearly love to win a fourth title.

The Patriots are the number one seeds this year because of their 12-4 record in the AFC East but they lived up to their seeding with a one-sided 45-7 win over the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Championship game – although the so-called ‘deflate-gate’ scandal of underinflated balls hangs over that result.

Coach Bill Belichick is a wily old pro and all of the Pats three previous Super Bowl triumphs came under his stewardship – although so did their defeats in both 2008 and 2012.  However, no team has appeared in more Super Bowls than the Patriots and the AFC champions are 10/11 to win their fourth title.

Seahawks the first team in a decade to appear in consecutive Super Bowl games

Quite how the Seahawks are even in the Super Bowl is anyone’s guess. With less than five minutes to go in the NFC Championship game they were down by 12 points and their fans had already started streaming out of the stadium.

However, touchdowns from Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch sparked an unlikely revival and the comeback was completed when Jermaine Kearse hauled in a 35 yard touchdown pass in overtime, to seal a 28-22 win.

This refusal to be beaten could be the key to the Seahawks’ success and it will be important on Sunday not to write them off if they fall behind. In past 8 games the reigning champions are 8-0  and have outscored opponents 130 – 26 in 2nd half/OT – a 104 point differential.

26 year old quarterback Russell Wilson already has a Super Bowl to his name and could end up as one of the game’s greats. He outshone one of the legendary QBs, Peyton Manning, in the Super Bowl last year – can he do it again in 2015?

Fans are keen to avoid a repeat of last year’s showpiece event which ended up as a horribly one-sided encounter. The Seahawks beat the Broncos 43-8 on that occasion but considering the relative merits of the two sides this year should be a closer affair.

Indeed, the bookmakers can’t separate the two teams in the ante-post betting. You can back either side at 10/11 to win while in the handicap coupon the Seahawks have a narrow 1 point handicap.

Ask any expert to predict the outcome and they will give you a different response. While it would be a great story of the Bill Belichick/Tom Brady partnership could win a fourth Super Bowl, the strong Seahawks’ defence could be the key here. Back the reigning champions to retain their crown at 10/11.

NFL Week 15 Preview

Week 15 of the NFL regular season is upon us and it’s crunch time for a host of teams who are struggling to make the postseason play-offs. One team that doesn’t have that anxiety is the highly-impressive New England Patriots. The Pats have a formidable home record in the NFL in recent seasons and the Green Bay Packers challenge should hold no fear for Patriots quarter-back Tom Brady in Week 15.
