Poor old Portsmouth. Not only are they pointless with six games of the season gone but with the pre transfer window revolving door still spinning Paul Hart is still presumably introducing some of his new squad to each other. It gets no easier this Saturday as David Moyes’ improving Everton side are the visitors to Fratton Park.

Phil Neville is a big miss for the Toffees as he brings a good defensive balance to their midfield but with a choice of attacking options returning I fully expect Pompey’s season to lurch from bad to worse.

Fulham host their London neighbours Arsenal at Craven Cottage having consolidated last season’s excellent finish with a decent start this time around. I really admire the job Roy Hodgson has done at Fulham and their home record is superb. Arsenal’s great start to the season came unstuck after consecutive defeats in Manchester but they routed Wigan 4-0 last weekend and I can see them getting something out of this one.

Liverpool host Hull, Manchester United travel to Stoke and Chelsea face Wigan and so it ought to be a straightforward enough week for the league’s big guns.

The FedEx Tour Championship is considered by many golfers to be one of the most difficult tournaments on the US PGA tour. With qualification for the tournament being dependent on a golfer’s performance throughout the year, the Championship aims to decide which competitor is “the” golfer of any given year.

2007 champion Tiger Woods was unable to defend his crown in 2008 through injury but is the favourite to take the 2009 title. With a strong field including Mike Weir, Angel Cabrera, Steve Stricker and Phil Mickelson it promises to be an enthralling weekend’s golf. Padraig Harrington and Luke Donald lead the home charge but it could be the year of the ever consistent Jim Furyk to claim the crown. With eight of his last twelve rounds at East Lake under par, the popular American can be backed at 15/1 to take the title.

The ATP tour heads to Thailand this weekend where a good quality field contests the seventh Thailand Open.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga is looking to retain the title he won in 2008 but with a strong field including Gilles Simon, Jarkko Nieminen and Jurgen Melzer it won’t be a foregone conclusion. Marat Safin also plays his last Thailand Open after reaching the semi finals here in 2004 and 2006.

The addition of world number three Rafael Nadal to the line-up adds an extra challenge and with the former world number one recovering well from injury the Spaniard will be the one to beat here.

It would be fair to say that England’s limited overs performances this summer have left something to be desired. A dreadful 6-1 hammering at the hands of Australia after a disappointing home Twenty20 World Cup has left Andrew Strauss’ side battered and bruised and next up is a tough Champions Trophy group.

England face Sri Lanka on Friday and South Africa on Sunday and they are going to have to find some inspirational form from somewhere considering they have won only two one day matches (and one of them against Ireland) since May. With home advantage the South Africans can surely pile more misery on England.

Our tips Wasps and Saracens duly obliged for us last weekend and both sides are enjoying a great start to the season.

Wasps face the first major test of their credentials as they travel to a free-scoring London Irish side who have racked up almost a hundred points in their last two outings. This should be a cracker of a match and I can see the home side shading an entertaining game.

Saracens should be able to keep their good run going with a home victory over Gloucester whilst Leicester Tigers can prevail in a tricky looking away tie at Bath.

Horse Racing

There is some superb racing in prospect at Ascot this coming weekend, the highlight of which is the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Saturday.

First run in 1955 it has been a group One race since 1987. The winner is guaranteed a spot in the Breeders’ Cup Mile and so there is always a strong field. Sussex Stakes winner Rip Van Winkle is the ante-post favourite although Delegator, Aqlaam and Mastercraftsman are all likely to feature.

The Stud Fillies Mile also attracts a high quality field of two year old fillies. Seta is the ante-post favourite and Lillie Langtry runs for Aidan O’Brien.
