After a groundbreaking first season in charge on Tyneside, Alan Pardew and his mercurial team of scouts look to build on their impressive record of signing raw talent from the continent and grooming them for success in the Premiership.
The first question Newcastle have to address in the new season is – who exactly is in charge? The appointment of Joe Kinnear as director of football seems designed to undermine manager Alan Pardew, who is already under pressure to improve on last season’s poor showing. The Magpies had their injury problems last term and lost top scorer Demba Ba to Chelsea in the January transfer window but nobody envisaged them dropping like a stone towards the foot of the table. Some of their fringe players have already left and others may follow but you get the impression owner Mike Ashley might be looking for a way out so maybe the Toon Army shouldn’t expect too many expensive signing to replace them, especially as those that arrived last season hardly covered themselves in glory. The likes of Yohann Cabaye have already expressed dissatisfaction by the way things have developed and, should a couple of United’s better players decide they’ve had enough, it might be a long season for the Geordies. We have United priced up to finish in both the top and bottom half of the table and they might be worth a second look in the market to be relegated.
